Wow! That’s Like An Answer

It was the summer of 1972 and Dave Bennett found himself with four others hiking through an unfamiliar canyon in southern Utah. Dave and the others had enrolled in a Youth Leadership class at BYU and now found themselves on a thirty-day hike and survival in the wilderness.

Their assignment was to walk through the canyon and meet up with the other groups at the end of the canyon. The farther through the narrow canyon they traveled, the more scarce the water became until there was none at all.

They walked all day. As the sun began to go down, the group was in a desperate situation. They were dehydrated and desperately needed water. Should they push on in the dark and hope they either found water or made it to the base camp, or should they camp where they were?

The group decided to pray and ask the Lord for help and guidance. Dave said,

“We knelt in a circle and prayed the Lord would bless us with water and guidance and safety to complete our journey. After the prayer, we stood and turned to resume our hike. However, I noticed off to my right a round rock, approximately one foot in diameter, sitting on top of a sand bar that ran along the canyon wall. Under the rock, the sand was dark. I stepped over to it and discovered a pool of clear, pure water behind the rock.”

Dave called the others over to see. They stood gazing in awe when suddenly Chris, who had been sent on the trip by the juvenile courts of Las Vegas, exclaimed, “Wow! That’s like an answer!”

Chris was then invited to offer a prayer of thanks. He agreed and did a fine job. The group camped there for the night, drinking their fill and cooking their food. The next morning there was just enough water to refill their canteens and brush their teeth, and then it was gone.

The story would be inspiring enough if it ended there, but it does not. Not far from their camp, the group came upon an abrupt vertical drop in the canyon floor. Had they continued on in the darkness, it is likely someone would have plunged the fifty feet to the bottom. Dave concluded, “Truly, our Father in Heaven was watching over us.”

Indeed, He is. Cry unto him for mercy, for He is mighty to save.
