Description

For the Beauty of the Earth

Take a look at this beautiful scenery. The following vistas come from Somerset in the south of England. It is a lovely area. Take a moment and enjoy what you see.

One day, in the spring of 1863, a 29-year-old young man took a walk somewhere near here. Then, he “sat on a hilltop outside his native city of Bath, England, admiring the country view and the winding Avon River.

The beauties of nature before him stirred his soul with a profound sense of gratitude to the Lord, and in poetry, he penned these words.

For the beauty of the earth,

For the beauty of the skies,

For the love which from our birth

Over and around us lies,

Lord of all, to thee we raise

This our hymn of grateful praise.

2.For the beauty of each hour

Of the day and of the night,

Hill and vale, and tree and flow’r,

Sun and moon, and stars of light

It would become the hymn For the Beauty of the Earth, and he would write 8 stanzas of praise in his original composition.

That young man was Folliott Sandford Pierpoint, who was born, October 7, 1835, in Bath, England. He was the son of William and Annabella Sandford Pierpoint.

Is it meaningful that this lofting hymn is published today across Christianity in 595 different hymnals? Indeed, it is, because when those who love Him look upon the creations of the Almighty under the influence of His Spirit, they see Him before their very eyes.
