Description

With A Kiss!

Jesus woke His apostles saying:

“Arise, and let us be going; Behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.” (Matthew 26:46)

Immediately, Judas entered the Garden with an armed mob, some of whom did not know Jesus by sight. In the shadows of the Garden, Judas came forward directly to the Savior and kissed him saying “Hail, Master.”

Jesus’ response is wrenching.

“Judas, betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss.” (John 22:48)

I don’t know all that a kiss means in the East, but it is still used today as a token of greeting and deep affection. The hypocrisy of Judas’ action—to kiss Him to kill him is painful to consider. Can you imagine being betrayed by the very ones with whom you have shared the sweetest affections and associations?

The Savior’s reaction to that deceitful kiss bespeaks the depth of pain Judas’ betrayal invoked. It hurt, more than we can easily understand.
