The Dent

Not long ago, my son took his family and went to church. When the meetings were over, they came out to climb into their car and discovered a big dent had been put into their car right on the crease line of the door. There was no note and of course no idea who had done it.

It just so happens that the car my son was driving that day was a Tesla, and there are only two people in his ward that drive Tëslas, and he’s one of them. And what’s more, Teslas have cameras on all sides that operate continuously.  So, my son pulled up the video footage of his car sitting in the church parking lot right next to a big black SUV.  He watched as a man he knew walked out during the meetings carrying a child. The man opened the door next to my son’s car and laid his child down and appeared to be changing a diaper. Suddenly the wind came up and caught the door and slammed it into my son’s car, leaving the big dent. Clearly, an accident!

The man walked over, looked down at the damage that he just created, and then closed the door of his vehicle and went back into church. He left no note and in the months that have ensued has never said a word.

My son has never identified the man and has never spoken to or confronted him about it. As far as I know, he has told no one about the incident.  He decided to just let it go. He has forgiven him, even though the man never asked.

But, does this man somehow think that because no one saw him, that he got away with it? That there will not be a demand of Justice to be faced?

We live in the presence of God and angels. Everything we say, think, feel, or do, is recorded on the records of heaven. We get away with nothing!

This story is meant to be a gentle reminder of the need for daily repentance. After all, in that last day when the sins of all men will be spoken from the house tops, I’m pretty sure you and I do not want our sins, done in secret, broadcast openly. Repentance erases the footage—thank heavens!!
