That’s all That Truly Matters

Debbie Johnson shared this story with me and I think it’s so tender and so meaningful. I think the world needs to know this. And she said it best.  Debbie described that she had struggled with her weight most of her life. So many people do.  She had very few friends and was teased.

All through her school years, the other children would laugh and point and some in their cruelty would throw themselves up against the lockers in the hallway to “make room for the fat girl”.  The high school years came and everyone else was dating except Debbie.  She just sat at home and was lonely.

Finally, one day she broke down in tears and she could take no more.  She said:

“I was sitting on the edge of my bed, and I just started praying, pouring my heart out. And I said, it didn’t matter as long as I knew that He loved me.  And all of a sudden, I felt an arm around me, comforting me, it kind of shocked me. I opened my eyes. There was no one there.  At that moment, I knew that He loved me.”

And as the years passed and more experiences came, Debbie clung to that moment.  She said, when things get hard and discouragement sets in, she remembers that moment.

She said it best:

“He loves me and knowing that means I can go on because that’s all that truly matters.”

Debbie, you are so right.  The love God feels for us is unconditional.  He loves us no matter what we do, or where we go. But, our ability to feel it, to receive it, to know it – that’s conditional. That sits on our shoulders. We have to get where we can feel that love, just like getting in tune on the radio. It is one of the most powerful, sacred experiences in all of mortality to know that Almighty God loves you and that you indeed are his son or his daughter.

And few things in life are more sacred than that knowledge.  And like Debbie, you will access it through real, worshipful, meaningful, prayer.
