She Hath Done What She Could

Remember that evening when Jesus came to Bethany and sat down to eat at the home of Martha, Lazarus, and Mary. In the course of the dinner, Mary did something most unusual. She came into the room with an alabaster box of very precious and costly ointment. She broke open the box and poured the ointment on his head and then proceeded to anoint his feet with the ointment and wipe them with her hair. The disciples were indignant against her and protested. But can you imagine how the Savior felt?

Mary had saved that precious ointment just for this occasion. She anointed Him in token of his burial—meaning that this ointment was preserved for the embalming and burying of His body. He would receive the finest she could give, and she would be there at his grave to offer it. Consider what Mary was saying to Him. ‘You are my Lord, my God, and my King. I will give my best for you, and I will be with you to the very end—even death!

And Jesus…

How many times had He taught, warned, and sought to prepare His disciples for the shocking and devastating events that would surround His death, and they either did not believe or understand? Peter even rejected it outright and refused to accept it. “Be it far from thee, Lord. This shall not be unto thee.” (Matthew 16:22) Can you imagine how frustrating and disheartening it must have been as they rejected out of their own pain His word?

And now to have Mary not only believe Him, but express that faith in such a loving and tender way. It touched His heart, and He invoked a blessing that all disciples for all time would remember her and what she had so lovingly done for Him. With all that lay ahead in the next few days, Mary’s mercy and kindness was a moment of the sweetest reprieve, and how grateful He was for her.
