Please Send Ed Perkovich

I’ve told this story before. It comes from my friend, Kim Moss. He tells of an experience that he had 30 years ago in Northwestern Montana.  Kim was on his way to a very important meeting, driving in his Toyota Land Cruiser.  On the way, he pulled into a fast food place for a sandwich.  But when he came back, the Toyota would not start.

Not a sound.  Kim was flummoxed. This had never happened before. Well, there happened to be an auto parts store next door. So, Kim walked over and he noticed two guys who looked as though “they might know their way around a wrench”.  He asked if they would give him a hand and they said, sure. They came, they looked, but they couldn’t figure it out.

They didn’t know what was wrong either. In fact, no one seemed to be able to figure it out. The two guys left. By now, Kim was getting nervous. He had to get to that meeting.  Kim then described what happened next:

“As I stood there alone, leaning over the fender, looking into the engine compartment, I closed my eyes and I said, ‘Father, I need help, and I need it soon. Father, please send Ed Perkovich.’”

Ed Perkovich is an American Indian.  Kim said he was: “Probably the greatest scriptorian I have ever known. He was a spiritual giant. When he prayed more than once, I found myself opening my eyes, expecting to see angels present in the room. Angels with heads bowed in humble reverence as they listened to rare and true communication.  Between man and his Heavenly Father. Just to hear this man pray was a true blessing. With little formal education, Ed was also a genius in a variety of other things. He was one of my life’s great heroes.”

After the prayer, Kim waited.  He didn’t have to wait more than a few minutes.  And he said: “I looked up and saw the most beautiful sight.”  Ed Perkovich was driving toward him.  Kim flagged him down and told him the dilemma. “And in an instant, Ed knew what to do and soon had me ready to go.”

But here’s the rest of the story. “As Ed was working to get me on the road again, I told him that I had prayed and asked specifically for him to come to my aid.  And Ed said,  ‘Oh, that explains it.  I was on my way to the Fred Meyer store to get some Elmer’s glue. I was in the turning lane with my turn signal on when the Spirit said to me, go get the glue at the drug fair on the far side of town. That would be many stoplights and two miles out of my way for a 49 cent bottle of glue. But I followed the Holy Spirit’s whispers and now I know why. You,  Kim Moss,  you prayed me here.’”

There are angels  who stand waiting and willing to help.  We have to pray them here.  There are answers to questions to the very depths of the mysteries of the universe.  We have to pray  and ask those questions.  If there are needs  that you have, mountains to move, as President Nelson said: pray, ask, get them moving.

And you get moving.
