I Felt An Arm Around Me

Debbie struggled with her weight most of her life. She had very few friends and was teased most of her school years. The other children laughed and pointed. Others would throw themselves against the lockers in the hall to “make room for the fat girl.”

The high school years came and everyone was dating, except Debbie. She just sat at home and was lonely. Finally, she could take no more and she broke down in tears. She described:

“I was sitting on the edge of my bed and I just starting praying pouring my heart out and I said it didn’t matter as long as I knew that he loved me when all of a sudden I felt an arm around me comforting me and it kind of shocked me so I opened my eyes and there was no one there. At that moment I knew that he loved me.”

As the years have passed, she has clung to this experience when things get hard and discouragement sets in. Debbie said it best: “He loves me and knowing that means I can go on because that’s all that truly matters.”

She is correct. The love God feels for us is unconditional. He loves us no matter what we do, but our ability to feel and receive His love is conditional. It is one of the most powerful experiences of mortality to know and feel that love. Few things in life are more sacred.
