How Thin the Veil Is

Lynette is almost 70 years-old and lives in Vernon, Utah. November 30, 2022, about 4:30 in the afternoon, Lynette went down to the corral to feed her horses. One of them came running and at a full trot and ran right into her, sending her sprawling. He hit her hard enough that it knocked her boots off.

Lynette tried to get up but the pain was excruciating. Unable to rise, she lay there in the snow. She knew her husband, with macular degeneration, would not be able to help her. No one else was near enough to hear or help her. What to do now? It was very cold outside and getting dark. Where she lives, her nearest neighbor is a 1\2 mile away. Lynette began to whisper a prayer. The horse that had injured her came over, as if in sorrow and regret, and stood by her. He would not leave her.

There in the fading light and frigid cold, Lynette prayed and yelled for help. She felt a heavenly presence surround her and hold her head up out of the snow. She calls the heavenly presence her angels. She knew they were family members and friends who have passed beyond the veil. They kept her alive.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her neighbors head down to do chores and she yelled even louder. They didn’t hear her. She yelled louder still, and by some miracle, her neighbor a half mile away heard her and came to investigate.

The moment the rescuers came the heavenly presence was gone and Lynette collapsed into the snow. First responders came and found her core temperature so low that it was a miracle she was still alive. She was given a priesthood blessing and taken to the hospital. Her right hip and femur were shattered.

After surgery and months of rehab, Lynette is back home on the ranch. Still getting about with a cane, but still here and still moving. She said, “I know I wouldn‘t be here talking to you without the Lord’s help. I know it with every fiber of my being. I wish it hadn’t happened, but I wouldn’t give up my sweet experiences for anything.  [It] has enriched my life to know how thin the veil is.”

Notice the two extremes of Lynette’s voice. With earnest whispered pleading, she prayed for help, and then, with all the volume she could muster, she yelled for help. It is a true principle that once we have prayed and asked God for help, we have to get up and do all we can to make it happen.
