Description

He Looked At The Stars

Sometime after the year 1870, an event occurred in Kanab, Utah that is astonishing and worth considering.

Twenty head of valuable horses came up missing in the community. “Most of them belonged to Jacob Hamblin and some belonged to Knapp Judd, [and] others to people here in Kanab,” says the record. The men went after them, tracking them to an area called Three Lakes. They “could tell the horses were being driven as their tracks showed they were running.” The men assumed that Indians had stolen them. They searched for days but could not find the horses.

With no other option they went to a local blacksmith named Thomas Robertson. He had a reputation for being able to find lost things. He “told them they would have to wait until dark when the stars were shining.”

The family records say:

“So when night came, grandfather went out and looked at the stars and did a little figuring and told the men that their horses were up in the head of a canyon called the Muddy, about twenty miles from here over by Mt. Carmel, and that two white men had them driven off. Sure enough, they were there and the two white men too. The men were strangers from Nevada…. Many such instances as losing oxen and cattle, or some valuable unreplaceable tools or axes, have been recovered from being lost in the hills and couldn’t be found after hours and days of searching. One time he told a man in Orderville where his lost cow was, right to the knoll and cedar tree she had hidden behind. This gift that grandfather had, became known all over the Southern part of the country, and Panguitch even wrote an article of the incident of the cow in their newspaper.”

Thomas Robertson was a man of faith, obedient to the Prophets. He lived a life according to the covenants to the end of his days.

So what about this gift of reading the stars…? I have no idea what this is or how it works. For that matter, I don’t comprehend the physics of divining rods, Liahonas, or seer stones. In fact, there is more of the Lord and His ways that I don’t comprehend than what I do. But I have learned, if the Prophets don’t condemn, neither do I. I will wait until the Lord makes all such mysteries known.
