Description

Bad Dog

Sandy Kelley joined the Church in 1965, and began her service as a missionary January 10, 1968, when she was called to serve in British Columbia, Canada. One bright sunny day while serving in Victoria, she and her companion decided to work in a different area. They called it “Martini Hill” because of the affluence of those who lived there. It was there she said, “I received a miracle of protection that I can still see in my mind’s eye to this day, and I am 81 years old.”

She and her companion were knocking on doors. As they walked, they came upon a “black wrought iron fence with an open gate and a long black asphalt driveway leading up to a house that was completely hidden by many trees and a lot of shrubbery.”

Both Sisters had the feeling not to go up that driveway. They intended to walk past it, but just as Sister Kelley was directly in front of the gate, there came a loud growling sound and the barking of what sounded like a very angry dog. She said:

“I paused to see what it was. To my horror I saw this big black dog running down the driveway from the house, and I knew he had my name on his very large white teeth.  There would be no escape.  I was doomed.  Then, all of a sudden, that lovely warm light surrounded me once again.  I heard a still small voice that said: ‘Be still.’ So, I did. I didn’t move. I was not afraid.

But the dog kept coming. Growling and snarling, tail between his legs.  He meant business.  Attack was imminent.  He got within inches of my leg; I could actually look down and see the top of his head. But I was still not afraid and stood absolutely still.”

Can’t you just picture it? What would you do if that were you? She continued:

“It was as though an invisible shield had surrounded me. You could almost hear his head hit that protective shield!  He yelped in extreme pain, turned tail and with equal speed, took off back up the driveway yelping in pain all the way up until he was out of sight. Bad dog. My companion and I just stood there.  ‘Wow, did you see that?’ I asked. She said that she did indeed see it. In silence we continued on our way.  I don’t know about her, but I was totally in awe, and thanked my Heavenly Father for his amazing protection on that beautiful sunny day.”

When we are on the Lord’s errand the Lord and His angels have our backs (and our legs).
